Lauren Greenfield’s Girl Culture is a collection of photographs that capture mostly ordinary females in different stages of life.

Slide 13 I found to be one of the most powerful examples of interdependent word-to-image relationships in the slideshow. In fact, I thought it was the most powerful image in the slideshow. We see a patient being helped to stand on a set of scales at a weight clinic. Her anemic body seems to struggle to stand as she solemnly stares at the ground. Upon reading the caption, we realize that she might actually be resisting and the workers are restraining her rather than helping. The caption tells us that she has chosen to stand backwards on the scales, apparently ashamed of the weight she has gained. In this scene, the words and image act together to complete the message.
